Habits have a purpose.  Habits and rituals are persistent routines and they save the brain from work and for more important functions.  Habits allow us to perform tasks without thinking. 

A recent study from Duke University on habits determined that 40% of all daily human activities are habits. Habits include physical, mental and emotional behaviors.  These daily habits unconsciously control our lives.  Positive daily habits enable you to focus on pursuing health, happiness and success.  They put you on autopilot for achieving your purpose and your vision.  Each good habit you add to your life has a cumulative effect.  Getting control of your habits is empowering.

How Habits Work:   The Habit Loop is a neurological loop that governs any habit. The habit loop consists of three elements: a cue, a routine, and a reward. Understanding these elements can help in understanding how to change bad habits and to form empowering ones.

1.       Cue/Trigger-familiar environment, point of reference that sends message to the brain

2.       Routine-how you respond to the cue.  Behavior you take.  One of the most successful ways to change a habit is to change the routine. 

3.       Reward-why we do that.  what you feel like and receive from the cue and routine

The idea is that our behavior is guided by a cue, routine and reward. To change your behavior, you need to isolate and identify the cues and rewards you are looking for.

The only thing that you need to change is the routine.

Having Awareness and Identifying the external triggers that set a habit in motion will Empower You to break bad habits.  Awareness is the key.  With out awareness, habit change is not possible.
